BY STEVE NUBIE 46 million Americans live below poverty level. But according to new statistics from the Census Bureau, 51 million American live just above it. The startling facts beyond traditional poverty statistics is that 1 in 3 Americans are close to or approaching poverty levels 1 in 3! Say what you will about the 1% of the super-rich, it's looking like only 66% can make ends meet while 33% fluctuate between poverty and a newly coined term, "the near poor." In fact, recent studies may take the number of individuals at or near poverty up to 50% of the American population.
